Free GTA 5 increased game sales

Data from the Take-Two Interactive financial report shows that after a promotion where the Epic Games Store could get a copy of Grand Theft Auto V for free, sales of the game increased. According to the president of the concern, Strauss Zelnick, it is related to the "growing group of recipients".

GTA V and GTA Online have had a great quarter. IN BRIEF: GTA V sold better in the last quarter than in the corresponding period of any previous year; most likely this is related to the promotion that offered free copies on the Epic Games Store; a total of nearly 135 million copies of the game have been sold. It seems that the promotion, where you could get a copy of Grand Theft Auto V for free on the Epic Games Store, contributed to the increase in sales of the blockbuster Rockstar Games studio. Such information appeared during a conversation with investors (after the PC Gamer portal), summarizing the financial results of the publisher of this title - Take-Two Interactive - in the last quarter (Q1 FY 2021 - from April to June this year).

In the six weeks following the end of the Epic Games Store promotion, Grand Theft Auto V sold more copies than in the same period in any previous year, said company president Strauss Zelnick. According to the boss of Take-Two, the above-mentioned phenomenon can be explained by the growing group of potential recipients. Thanks to the EGS action, the game was won by people who were not interested in it before, and these, in turn, probably attracted their friends to play. Players who did not manage to get a free copy decided to buy it. In total, nearly 135 million copies of GTA V have already been sold, with as many as 15 million copies purchased since February this year. The promotion on EGS also resulted in record revenues from micropayments (increased by 155%) and the second largest number of newly registered players in GTA Online since its premiere in 2012. Given these statistics, it is hardly surprising that the production will also be released on next-gen consoles.
